I have been printing limited edition serigraphs for Native Americans in Alaska for twenty nine years.
Christopher Nowicki has lived in Wroclaw, Poland for the last twenty five years and works as a Professor of Printmaking at the Eugenusza Gepperta Academy of Fine Art. Chris has curated exhibitions of Polish Printmaking in Scotland, USA, Romania, Greece South Korea and China.
Christopher Nowicki learned printmaking from Peter Elloian at the ‘Toledo Museum of Art School of Design’ in Toledo, Ohio. He then studied for his Master’s Degree at the ‘University of Washington in Seattle’, graduating in 1977. During that time he was an assistant for visiting professors John Ross and Clare Romano. Then he was Assistant of Record for well known Collograph printmaker Professor Glen Alps for the duration of his studies.
In 1993 Christopher moved to Wroclaw, Poland to be in a better printmaking environment. In 1994 he began teaching at the ‘Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design’ where he achieved his Doctorate and became a full Polish Professor recieving this distiction from the President of Poland. Now living in Wroclaw and concentrating his efforts on the mezzotint technique Christopher is a founding member of the Wroclaw School of Printmaking Group.
During his career Christopher has performed over fifty solo exhibitions and participated in over one hundred and fifty group showings and competitions. He has performed more than thirty invited lectures in Europe, the USA, China and Japan. He was invited as a Visiting Professor at ‘Northeast Normal University in Changchun’, China in 2013 and was awarded an Honorary Professor at ‘Yanbian University’ in Yanji, China that same year. In addition, he has curated over thirty group exhibitions including the largest ‘Polish Contemporary Print Exhibition’ ever assembled, which traveled to Tianjin, China, Seoul, South Korea, New Delhi, India, Porto, Portugal and Poland.
Working on his Master’s Degree in Seattle Christopher also worked at ‘Two Dimensions’, a Screen Process printing company, where he was first introduced to ‘Northwest Coast Formline Style’ design. It was there that he began printing limited edition serigraphs for famous Northwest Coast artists such as Duane Pasco, Barry Herem and John Goodwin. As Christopher became the preferred printmaker for many Northwest Coast Native Artists, he was invited to ‘Alaska Indian Arts’ in Haines, Alaska and print for Native Artists of that region. From 1993 to 2019 Christopher spent his summers in Haines printing limited editions for various well known Northwest Coast artists such as Allie High, Jeff Skaflestad, Ray Watkins, Wayne Price, Greg Horner, John Hagen and many others.
