Printmaking Limited Edition Alaska

My studio in Alaska is located in the Alaska Indian Arts Building at Fort Seward in Haines Alaska.

I have been Silkscreen Printing Haines, Alaska in the summer for over twenty years to create limited edition serigraphs for Native Americans. Before Alaska I was printing Native Artwork in Seattle and have been doing this work off and on for more than 30 years. The entire process is done by hand, hand-cut stencils and hand printing. As I now live in Wroclaw I travel from Poland each summer to Haines to create limited edition silk screened prints for Northwest Coast Style Artists in Alaska and Canada. The limited edition fine art prints are done on-site at Alaska Indian Arts in Haines AK, a location that is common to many of the associated Artists. These Northwest Coast Style Form-line style prints are all hand-cut and hand-printed, a tedious and laborious process.

This summer of 2011 in Haines was busier than usual. Prints for Allie High, Preston Singletary and Jeff Skaflestad took up most of the seven weeks I was here. In all, ten editions were printed so I made about 1200 prints this season and were mostly three color versions requiring a print action for each color.

The weather was cooperating but it was cold and rainy most of the time with an occasional beautiful day. There was a record snowfall last winter so all the plants were about a month late this year. This brought a lot of bears to town since there weren’t many blueberries in the mountains. We saw lots of eagles, ravens, bears and whales but even though they walked right through the middle of town we didn’t see any moose.

The last three days I was there were really beautiful. I was able to go fishing with my son Mel and he caught a 17 lb. King salmon. And our last day we had a great kayak trip on Lynn Canal.
