Rapt Wolf Drum

Rapt Wolf Drum 22 inches

This design was great fun for me. I really wanted a wolf but not an ordinary formline wolf. For about two weeks this wolf worked in me, sliding around my mind, sometimes propping his chin on my shoulder, but only bits of him exposed at a time, and I kept thinking how in the world am I going to put him together in a congruent image. One morning I woke up knowing this wolf, like most in the wild, is a creature of the shadows, one who tries to hide himself, and the idea of doing him in reverse negative (painting the space that ordinarily would be unpainted) would give him the illusion he needed that he was hidden. When I got through with the drum I knew he was happy with the result: he is tightly coiled in the shadows with a little glint in his eye, fully intent upon something only he can see and which we can only imagine.

  1. Oh Yeah! This drum spent the night at my house, and when he was left here he had no voice, just a sort of dull thump. I left him on the table next to the wood stove and under the fan. By next morning he had his voice! He has wonderful tone and resonance! I wish I could have heard Joe David sing with him!

Totally Awesome, Melonie! He might be my favorite drum of yours…but then there’s the Chilcat blanket drum, Oh, and then there’s the Copper Woman drum and then there’s the….. Hey, Chica, You rock! or is it beat?!!

Beautiful! I love the reverse negative effect. It is really beautiful and fits the wolf perfectly.
