Mighty Octopus with Abalone Eyes

There are several stories that feature octopus in various roles. This particular design was created by request from a native of Juneau AK. It is wider than the Octopus D0042 design and is a face on design rather than a profile design so you can see both eyes. We now live near Puget Sound which has the world’s largest Octopi. The largest I have seen measured 22 feet, yes 22 feet from arm tip to arm tip. I measured it myself. I wish I had been able to observe this magnificent creature in life. This bracelet captures the sinuous twisting and turning of the arms, but don’t look for numerical accuracy, that would mandate a very wide bracelet.

Whooo- Hooo ! What a beauty! Octopi may be the smartest of all the sea animals. There are so many stories of them tricking and outsmarting humans.

  2. Dave Lapof and I used to run a dragger, way back in the old days when such things were still going on in the Salish Sea. One day we hauled up a small octopus about 20 to 24 inches from arm tip to arm tip. It was so cute we decided to take it home to show our children, so we put it in a bucket, put a board over the top so there was no space for it to get out. We then finished cleaning up from that haul and set the net again and began to tow. We towed for about 20 minutes and came back up on deck to check everything and see if we should haul. We came out of the house just in time to see that little octopus going out the scupper and back into the water! We checked the bucket, it was still covered, still had weight on it, and you would think there was no way it could get away, yet we saw it go overboard!
