In my visit to Skagway to visit Terry Williams I took the fast ferry out of Haines. I was surprized at how fast it goes, it has 4 engines and a Cat type hull, totally cool. There were 7 cruise ships in Skagway that day, they can only fit a couple in the harbor at a time. Lynn Canal is like a fjord where the mountains go right down into the water, which allows for large ships to be near shore.
