Fog Woman & Trickster Raven; A love story
I’ve always loved the Fog Woman & Trickster Raven story, but recently I began thinking of the original story in a broader sense, thinking about how the story would have evolved over time, and how Fog Woman and Raven would both have changed throughout the years since the very great long ago. I’ve always suspected Raven isn’t the complete cad he acts, and I’ve always secretly believed Raven has a tender heart few get to see. While I was thinking about this story I realized Raven truly loved his beautiful Fog Woman when he wooed her, and that he loves her still. When I painted this piece I wanted to show him in his original condition, with white feathers, still pristine, wrapped around his beautiful wife, her nestled within his wings. She’s in her half woman, half Salmon form reminding us she’s a transformational character. On her head is her magic hat, studded with beads. And from the hat run strings of small copper Salmon which Raven, still being a greedy hungry Raven, can’t resist trying to catch. Fog Woman wears a small Copper around her neck to remind us she’s one of the ancients, of the highest nobility and worthy of our deepest respect and care.
