365 Project – Day 19
My children have amazing eyes. Doesn’t every person in love with another think that about them? I surely think that about my babies!
Nearly 100% of my photography is tinted with “Mom Goggles” but that’s OK by me! My children have all inherited my husband’s beautiful brown eyes but they have my long curly eye lashes. I love these little eyes and everything that lies behind them.
Day 19 was taken with a Nikon D90. 60mm focal length, f/3.2 with a shutter speed of 1/500, ISO 800. Natural light.
One great thing about this shot is the Catchlights in his eyes. When you are taking photos of people or animals it is very desirable to have a reflection of the light source in their eyes. This reflection is called a catchlight.
The reason it is so desirable is that it makes round shiny objects, like eyes, look alive. It adds a very nice 3-D effect that helps the viewer connect to the image.
You can find catchlights in all kinds of objects. They come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colors but they all do the same things, show the 3-D nature of the object in the photograph.
A little game I like to play when I look at a photograph is to try to figure out what the light source looked light. Often, as in this photograph, if you look carefully you can see the photographer too. In this photo, my large dining room window is the light source.

oooh he’s a darling!!!! And I’m in love!!! Catchlights…hmmm, kinda’ Tony Curtis stuff!
I really have trouble with catch lights when I don’t want them in my jewelry photos. I don’t want to be able to see myself or the camera lens or the color of the wall in the room where I’m photographing so I’ve been trying different techniques like a reflector box or making sure the lens reflection is in a textured spot……….always a challenge!
